Survey on Leaching of Coatings Used in Nuclear Power Plants: Letter Report

This letter report presents the result of a survey of open-literature information on the leaching characteristics of coatings used in nuclear power plants. The survey, in general, indicated a complete lack of information on leachability, leaching rate, and potential leaching constituents of nuclear-powerplant coatings. Furthermore, there has been no concerted test program to evaluate the role of coating parameters and the effect of environmental variables (temperature, pH, pressure, etc.) on the long-term chemical performance of the coatings. Most of the testing emphasized evaluation for design-basis accident conditions and for resistance to irradiation.
